Greenlane Accident: Motorcyclist Died in Crash on Southern Motorway, Auckland, NZ; Police Responses

A motorcyclist has died following a serious crash with a truck that led to the closure of the Southern Motorway’s southbound lanes near Greenlane this morning.

Authorities expect the motorway to remain closed for at least two more hours, with commuters describing the scene as “distressing.”

Police are seeking witnesses who may have seen the tragic incident and are also offering welfare referrals to those affected by the scene.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) confirmed the crash is blocking southbound lanes at the Greenlane interchange, advising motorists to delay travel or expect significant delays and diversions. “Consider using an alternative route south,” NZTA stated.

Commuters have reported emotional reactions to the crash.

According to police, the crash occurred around 8 AM. Witnesses can contact 105 and reference case number P061612219 to provide information.

Southbound traffic is being diverted off the motorway at the Greenlane East off-ramp before rejoining via the on-ramp. Police acknowledged motorists’ patience as emergency crews worked at the scene.

“We continue to encourage motorists to consider alternative routes through the city, including using State Highways 16 and 20,” a police spokesperson said.

Traffic congestion is severe, with Google Maps showing delays stretching approximately 4.5 km back into the city. NZTA has also warned of “long delays” for northbound traffic.
