Justin Diaz New York NY Car Accident; MTA Bus Driver Fatally Strikes 57-Year-Old Cyclist in the Bronx

On Wednesday, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) announced that it is actively investigating two tragic fatal crashes in the boroughs of the Bronx and Queens, both of which have left families grieving and communities in shock. These incidents have reignited concerns about road safety, especially concerning vulnerable road users like cyclists and young drivers.

The first incident transpired in Mott Haven, Bronx at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday night. According to police reports, an MTA bus driver, who has since been identified as 35 years old, was making a turn from East 149th Street onto Brook Avenue when he struck a 57-year-old male cyclist.

The impact of the collision was catastrophic; the cyclist was forcibly thrown from his bike and, tragically, first responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Identification of the victim was initially withheld as authorities worked to notify his family, a procedure that underscores the sensitivity surrounding such incidents.

The bus involved in the accident was reportedly operating as a replacement shuttle for the 2 train and, thankfully, did not have any passengers at the time of the unfortunate crash. The bus driver remained at the scene, cooperating with authorities. As of the latest updates, he has not been charged with any crime, and it remains to be seen what conclusions the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad will draw from their inquiry.
