Trustee Dave Dobson was a dedicated educator, coach, and advocate whose unwavering commitment to education and athletics left a profound impact on countless students and colleagues.

His passing this weekend is a tremendous loss to the community he so passionately served. Born and raised on a dairy farm near Cobden, Dave developed a strong work ethic and a deep sense of community from an early age.

He attended Opeongo High School, where his passion for sports and academics flourished. Determined to further his education, he pursued higher studies at Carleton University and the University of Toronto, equipping himself with the knowledge and skills that would shape his illustrious career in education.

Dave dedicated 28 years of his life to teaching high school students in Oshawa, where he also made a significant impact as a volleyball coach. His coaching philosophy emphasized not just athletic excellence but also personal growth, teamwork, and resilience.

His dedication to the sport earned him several prestigious accolades, including the esteemed 3M Award for Coaching Excellence in Canada. His contributions to volleyball extended beyond coaching, as he played a pivotal role in establishing the volleyball program at Durham College, earning him a place in the Durham College Hall of Fame.

His excellence in teaching was also recognized at the national level, with a nomination for the Governor General Award for Teaching Excellence. After an impactful career in Oshawa, Dave returned to his roots, continuing to serve his community with the same passion and dedication.

He resumed coaching volleyball at Opeongo High School, where he inspired a new generation of athletes with his knowledge and enthusiasm.

His commitment to young people extended beyond the gymnasium; he actively volunteered in various community initiatives and even took on the role of a local bus driver, ensuring students had safe and reliable transportation to and from school.

Dave’s advocacy for students and school staff was a hallmark of his tenure as a Trustee for the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB). He was a tireless champion of public education, always striving to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

His leadership and dedication to student success were evident in his efforts to implement leadership programs and mentorship opportunities, equipping students with the tools they needed to thrive both academically and personally.
